Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka

Shri Siddaramaiah was born on 12th August 1948 at Siddaramanahundi,a village in Varuna Hobli of Mysore district. Shri Siddaramaiah hails from a farming community. He is the first in his family to have graduated from Mysore University with a degree in Science and later had a degree in Law from the same University. He pursued legal profession and also taught at the college.

Shri Siddaramaiah, as an eloquent speaker in his student days,was known for his oratory skills. His early life was influenced by Socialist philosophy of Dr Ram Monohar Lohia. To explore more meaningful and effective avenues to achieve social justice for the downtrodden and the weaker sections of the society, he bid adieu to his law pursuits and entered politics.

Contesting on Bharatiya Lok Dal Party, he became a member of the Legislative Assembly in 1983 from Chamundeshwari Constituency in Mysore district. Later, he joined the ruling Janata Party. He became the first President of Kannada Kaavalu Samiti ( Kannada Watchdog Committee ) set up to supervise the implementation of Kannada as an official language. He worked assiduously for the enrichment of Kannada language and promotion of Culture.

During the mid-term poll in 1985, Shri Siddaramaiah was re-elected. He became the Minister of State for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, which he served with distinction. Later, he served as Minister for Sericulture. During his tenure, there was all-round development of the Silk Industry. He also served as Minister for Transport and his innovative programmes and policies were appreciated by people.

He won again in 1994 elections. The intensity of his hard work came to the fore, when he became the Minister for Finance and later in 1996 as Deputy Chief Minister, as he took several measures to augment revenues, repayment of debts and brought down the fiscal and revenue deficit, considerably. CRISIL, a leading independent credit rating company, reported Karnataka as a State with sound financial position in the country. He was instrumental in introducing the Value Added Tax system in the State, which resulted in streamlining the tax administration leading to sustainable revenues to the state exchequer. The State never went for an overdraft in the successive years.

In August 2004, again, he became the Deputy Chief Minister with finance portfolio. He strived for better economic growth and improvement of the revenue generation by plugging the loopholes in the tax system. All his budgets were appreciated by all classes of people. In all, he has presented eight budgets in the State, which is a record.

He was appointed as the Chairman of the Publicity for the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee for the 2008 General Elections and he strived hard to garner maximum votes in favour of Congress party. In 2008, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly.

He toured all over the State and undertook Padayatra - a walk from Bangalore to Bellary, which is more than 300 kms in protest against illegal mining. He was instrumental in reviving Congress Party in a systematic manner in the State Legislative Assembly Elections in 2013. He took the initiative of developing leadership within the Congress Party and revived the grass-root level leadership.

The Congress Party won 122 seats in 2013 elections and formed the new Government after a nine-year gap. Shri Siddaramaiah was unanimously elected as leader of Congress Legislative Party and took oath of office as 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka State on May 13, 2013.

Shri Siddaramaiah, undoubtedly, is a leader of the masses. He is popular among all sections of the society in general and a symbol of hope for the backward classes in particular. He has always proved himself to be a pioneering and a visionary leader.

Shri Siddaramaiah is a straight forward, transparent, visionary leader. His down to earth approach, deep commitment to the socially disadvantaged sections of society composed with a honest and transparent approach in administration and governance has instilled confidence in Karnataka to achieve higher growth and equity.
