Mr Nalinkumar Kothari was born in Djibouti on 21 September 1947 and is the 3rd generation of high profile Kothari family of Djibouti. He had his earlier education in Djibouti, when Djibouti was a French colony. Thereafter, he moved to India where he completed his secondary higher level and graduated as Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) from Bombay University in the year 1969. Upon his graduation, he returned to Djibouti and joined the family’s business group J. J. Kothari Et Co. Ltd. During 1972-84, the company under his leadership expanded its Agency Representation activity securing exclusivity of renowned shipping lines.
His late father Sumanlal J. Kothari was Honorary Consul for India in Djibouti and upon retirement of his father, he received honorable distinction of becoming Honorary Consul for India in December 1987. During the South Yemen War in January 1986, Mr. Nalin Kothari had led the operation of evacuation to shelter and repatriate Indian citizens from Djibouti to India. In consideration of his brave and meticulous handling of evacuation, he was appointed Honorary Consul General of India on 4th December 1987. Again in April 2015, during evacuation of Indians from Yemen under ‘Operation Rahaat’ under the leadership of General (Dr.) V.K. Singh (Retd.), Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr. Nalin Kothari significantly contributed towards the evacuation effort in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs.
